Winter - Spring 2009: Sustainable Neighborhoods Organizing Meetings

Over the winter, a number of community leaders are organizing neighborhood conversations by residents to establish sustainable neighborhoods working groups, as part of local and global movements towards "the new localism."

While these projects build on the experience of community organizing efforts of the past generation, there are also significant differences of values, strategy and democratic process for this new generation of organizers.

To learn more about some of these efforts and to start or attend conversations please visit the Sustainable Neighborhoods website.

Sunday, November 16th

About the workshop:

We are moving towards ecological societies, with great opportunities to build a positive future:

Neighborhood democracy, renewable energy, real economic development, sustainable businesses, healthy local food, stronger families and social connections, and ways to act locally and globally everyday for a world that works for everyone.

  • What are your challenges in greening your neighborhood?
  • How are you and your neighbors crafting neighborhood sustainability?
  • How do we create urban ecovillages now?

This is an action-learning workshop, so we will have an opportunity to collaborate on real issues in Louisville neighborhoods. Participants will have the opportunity to work in groups on sustainability organizing and urban ecovillage planning for your block or neighborhood. Click Here to read more and RSVP

The workshop will highlight sustainability theory and organizing strategies, with brief case studies from Louisville and around the world, exploring the following questions and opportunities for action:

  • How have successful sustainable community organizers changed their neighborhoods for the better?
  • What are the challenges raised by the transition to sustainable societies?
  • How does sustainability organizing differ from and connect with traditional neighborhood organizing?
  • How do neighborhood ecovillages grow?
  • How do we measure our sustainability successes and failures?
  • How do we collaborate effectively and keep learning and action moving forward?
  • What resources are available to support neighborhoods moving towards sustainability?

Not only is this a discussion, it is a forum for all those who are interested, as well as a springboard for project-oriented groups to come together and actually achieve realistic goals.

Please attend, bring a friend or colleague, forward this announcement, and join us in exploring how to support community efforts to green our neighborhoods.

Free and open to the public.

Donations Welcome! Donations to the Sustainable Neighborhoods Workshop will go to support the sustainability efforts of Brickhouse and the Adena Institute.

Stirring It Up: How to Make Money and Save the World

Corporate Social Responsibility book signing:

Stirring It Up with Gary Hirshberg

Friday, January 25th @ 2:30 PM

Metro United Way, 334 E. Broadway

(via Carol Besse and Sustainability Forum - Thanks)

Carmichael’s Bookstore is pleased to host a talk and book-signing by  Gary Hirshberg, CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farm and author of the new book

Stirring It Up: How to Make Money and Save the World.

The event will be held on Friday, January 25th from 2:30 to 4 PM in the Community Room at Metro United Way’s office, 334 East Broadway. It is co-sponsored by  Metro United Way, Community Farm Alliance, and Rainbow Blossom Natural Foods.

Stonyfield Farm began in 1983 as a seven-cow operation and has grown into a $330 million company and the world’s largest maker of organic yogurt. The company has achieved  double-digit revenue growth and excellent profits each year for the past two decades while adopting sustainable  methods that reduce environmental costs and rebalance the planet’s natural systems. Through re-use and recycling, Stonyfield prevents hundreds of tons of materials from reaching landfills and incinerators each year. They also collect their recyclable cups and turn them into useful products, like toothbrushes and razors.

Some of Stonyfield Farm’s unique efforts that are outlined in his book

include using organic ingredients that are environmentally friendly even if it means higher costs, and promoting environmental awareness and activism on two million yogurt lids per week to spread the word about  important green issues including climate change. In Stirring It Up, Hirshberg demonstrates how any business can follow suit and help save the planet while achieving higher growth and better profits. Throughout the book,  he uses examples from his own experience and from companies like Patagonia, Timberland, and Newman's  Own to provide readers with information connecting what they consume with the world they inhabit, empowering the average shopper to look beyond the check-out line and toward a sustainable, greener future. In keeping with his principles, each

copy of Stirring It Up is made of recycled paper composed of 100% post-consumer waste.

The event is free and open to the public. Please call Carmichael’s at   896-6950 for more information on the event.

The Practical Tools and Solutions for Sustaining Family Farms conference returns to Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky, January 16-19, 2008.

Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (Southern SAWG) holds its seventeenth annual conference in Louisville, Ky., January 16-19, 2008 in the beautiful downtown Galt House Hotel and Suites.

The conference attracts over 1,200 farmers and advocates working toward sustainable food systems in the South. The two full days of regular conference sessions start a half day earlier this year on Friday morning with even more practical sessions from which to choose.

The day and a half of pre-conference offerings begin on Wednesday at noon and include; eight intensive short courses, five field trips and five new hands-on activities. Then, on Friday morning, the conference begins and includes 62 practical sessions to choose from. This year we’ll also offer twenty U-Pick networking meetings for sharing and learning from each other. The conference sessions will cover sustainable production for horticulture and livestock producers, direct marketing strategies, business management, farm policy issues, and community food systems. The thing that sets the Southern SAWG Conference apart from others is the focus on PRACTICAL information.
