Solar Photovoltaic Workshops at the University of Louisville, January 16-18

The Kentucky Solar Partnership and the University of Louisville are offering a series of workshops on Solar Photovoltaics at the University of Louisville’s Shelby Campus. Three separate workshops oriented towards different audiences

 are being offered. The workshops qualify for CEU coursework from the Program in Sustainability Studies of the Adena Center.

Instructor Chris LaForge is a Systems Manager with Great Northern Solar in Port Wing, Wisconsin. Chris has taught PV system design and installation for the Midwest Renewable Energy Association since 1993 and offers contractor trainings throughout the Unites States. He has been a NABCAP certified PV installer since 2004 and is a certified PV Instructor with the Institute for Sustainable Power (ISP) since 2003.

January 16 – 17 : Introduction to Solar Photovoltaics
For Electrical Contractors, Solar Installers, and Building Design Professionals
8:00 am – 5:00 pm, $170
Location: University of Louisville Shelby Campus
Founders Union Building, Rm. 218
AParticipants in this two-day workshop will gain a basic understanding of solar electric (photovoltaic) design and installation principles. They will learn about how PV works, the four PV system types, how to describe and identify components, the best applications and limitations of each system type, defining the solar window, energy efficiency and load estimates, PV mounting types, the basics of site assessment tools, safety, battery connections, and basic line drawings. Hands-on activities will include basic installation techniques.
Registration includes lunch. AIA members will be able to submit self-reporting forms for Continuing Education Units. Other professionals and the public will be able to submit forms for Certificates of Course Completion and Continuing Education Units in Sustainability Studies from the Adena Center at Webster University.

January 18 : Solar PV Electrical Code Primer
For Code Officials, Installers, Inspectors, and Building Professionals
8:00 am – 12:00 pm, $40

Location: University of Louisville Shelby CampusBurhans Hall, Rm. 207
This course presents an in-depth analysis of issues for PV systems relating to NEC Section 690. Code issues in PV system design and specification will be covered as well as issues concerning product requirements, wiring, grounding and labeling. PV equipment will be on-hand. AIA members will be able to submit self-reporting forms for Continuing Education Units. Other professionals and the public will be able to submit forms for Certificates of Course Completion and Continuing Education Units in Sustainability Studies from the Adena Center at Webster University.


January 18 : Introduction to Solar PV
For Consumers

1:30 pm – 5:30 pm, $25

Location: University of Louisville Shelby Campus
Burhans Hall, Rm. 207

This workshop will introduce consumers to the basic principles of solar photovoltaics, including the different system types, choosing the right applications and systems, energy efficiency and load management, and basic components. Participants will learn about trends in the solar PV industry and how to combine energy efficiency and conservation efforts with PV system design, to achieve the most economical and effective PV installation. PV equipment will be on-hand. Professionals and the public will be able to submit forms for Certificates of Course Completion and Continuing Education Units in Sustainability Studies from the Aden Center at Webster University.


Sustainability Studies: The workshops qualify for CEU coursework in the Program in Sustainability Studies of the Adena Center. Sustainability Continuing Education Credit and course Certificates of Completion are available.
