This workshop provides a comprehensive introduction to solar water heating systems, focusing on the two freeze-protected system types suitable for year-round use in Kentucky, pressurized glycol and drainback systems. Participants will receive a certificate for 14 hours of training that can be applied towards meeting candidate eligibility requirements for NABCEP solar thermal installer certification. The course provides 14 CEU’s for NABCEP-certified installers. Registration includes a copy of Solar Water Heating by Bob Ramlow, plus lunch and refreshments both days.

Creating a Successful Solar or Energy Conservation Business

This workshop is directed towards small businesses working in the expanding “clean energy” sector – solar and other renewable energies, energy efficiency, conservation, and green building. The workshop will present successful business management and marketing strategies that can help small businesses establish a strong foundation for long-term success.

Bill Guiney of Johnson Controls, Inc. will speak from 30 years of experience in the solar industry about the fundamentals of managing a solar energy business, successful marketing strategies, and lessons he’s learned over the years. Bill Schutters of MACED will present “Guerilla Marketing Tactics for the Entrepreneur” and “Elements of Entrepreneurship,” discussing characteristics of small businesses that are outside traditional business management.

Participants will receive a certificate for 7 hours of training that can be applied towards meeting candidate eligibility requirements for NABCEP solar thermal installer certification. This course provides 7 CEU’s for NABCEP-certified installers. Registration includes lunch and refreshments.

LEED Green Associate (GA) Exam Training
This one day workshop prepares you to pass Part 1 of the LEED Accredited Professional Exam - LEED Green Associate. The Green Associate credential is essential for anyone who wants to prove their familiarity with the green building industry and mandatory for anyone planning to purse the LEED AP+ Specialty designation.

Participants will receive an eligibility certificate to take the LEED Green Associate exam upon completion of this course.

LEED AP+ Building Design & Construction (BD&C) Exam Training
Replacing the LEED AP for New Construction exam track, this specialty provides a standard for professionals participating in the design and construction phases of high-performance, healthful, durable, affordable and environmentally sound buildings. This workshop prepares you for Part II of the LEED Accredited Professional Exam and covers in detail every LEED prerequisite and credit, the mechanics of LEED, basic green building methods and systems likely to appear on the exam.

Please be aware you must have verifiable LEED project experience within the last three years to sit for this exam. Certified or registered LEED project experience applies.

Transition Training Information:

The Transition Training will be at the historic Hubble House in the South Valley of Albuquerque on June 13-14, 2009.

We are so lucky that Alaistair Lough, from Portland, Maine, one of the first Transition Trainers in the US is going to be with us. He was trained by Rob Hopkins and has conducted numerous workshops. He and his wife Pat, are a part of the Transtion Initiating Group in Portland. Alaistair is a Ph.D. hydrologist, a permaculturalist and also one of the Pachamama Alliance facilitators.

Venue & logistics: Sat - Sun, June 13-14, 2009 at the Hubble House (Rio Bravo Exit off I-25). The Hubble House is an old adobe Trading Post, beautifully rennovated, adjacent to luxerious open land, an acequia, garden, farm etc. We will provide some tasty food and snacks from our foodshed and have potluck lunches outside.
The program is 9am - 5pm with an hour for lunch. We could have an evening activity.

Zaida Amaral is an Environmental Architect, Feng Shui Master and Community Builder. She is a Co-Founder of Cunha Eco Village in Brazil and the Director of EcoVillage Design Southwest in Albuquerque. She is a drummer, dancer, Mother of a 4-year old daughter and a passionate, international activist. Zaida took her graduate work at Findhorn Foundation in Scotland and is one of 21 US Transition Trainers.

Maggie Seeley is an organizational consultant who specializes in using the Triple Bottom Line (people, profit and the planet) with individual, organizational, business and community decision making. “Adapting Buildings and Cities for 3°C of Climate Change”

We all know that the world is changing fast, and four events in particular really have really made us sit up and think about the future:

• The first was the effect of the European heat wave of July 2003 that killed more than 35,000 people; 15,000 alone lived in ordinary buildings in France, mainly the vulnerable and elderly, many living on the top floors of blocks with uninsulated metal roofs.

• The second event happened a month later: the August 2003 power failure that affected over 50 million people in the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Again these buildings failed to provide adequate shelter against “events.”

• The third event that shocked the world was the day the levees breached in New Orleans, the city that failed to protect its people.

• The fourth has been the rise and rise of oil and gas prices around the world, heralding that the fact that we are already over “peak oil,” we are simply, as a planet, beginning to run out of oil and gas.

• The fifth event has been the collapse of the domestic and commercial property markets.

In this talk, Sue Roaf outlines a range of building- and climate-related risks that individuals may be facing in the future and then presents a range of actions that homeowners and legislators can begin to take to future-proof lifestyles in the building and cities around the world against the predictable and growing challenges of the twentyfirst century. At the heart of the solutions available is the concept of low-carbon buildings. Roaf’s talk defines what these are and how we can help them to happen. She also discusses the challenge of re-designing the built environment, society, and the economy for the predicted 3°C of climate change by 2065.

Roaf is professor of architectural engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, visiting professor at the Open University, and a visiting Fellow at Arizona State University. She spent 10 years in the Middle East studying the Windcatchers of Yazd, living with nomads and excavating in Iraq. She has also practiced as a landscape consultant in Iraq and the Gulf.

Roaf’s research interests over the last two decades have centered on thermal comfort, ecological building design, building integrated renewable energy systems, adaptation of the built environment for climate change, carbon accounting, and the traditional technologies of the Middle East. She recently chaired international conferences on solar cities, carbon counting, architectural education, thermal comfort, and post-occupancy evaluation. She has also written, co-written, and edited numerous publications, including 10 books.

Immediately following the Plenary Session in the Ballroom Foyer, Roaf will be available to sign purchased copies of her book, Ecohouse, A Design Guide, Second Edition ($50).

We are moving towards ecological societies, with great opportunities to build a positive future:

Neighborhood democracy, renewable energy, real economic development, sustainable businesses, healthy local food, stronger families and social connections, and ways to act locally and globally everyday for a world that works for everyone.

How are you and your neighbors crafting neighborhood sustainability?

This is an action-learning workshop, so we will have an opportunity to collaborate on real issues in Louisville neighborhoods. How do neighborhood ecovillages grow?

Not only is this a discussion, it is a forum for all those who are interested, as well as a springboard for project-oriented groups to come together and actually achieve realistic goals.

and a book about God," capturing the essence of what contemporary theologian Matthew Fox has termed, "Creation Spirituality”.

Beginning Wednesday September 17, 2008, Sustainable Clift*n and partner community organizations will offer a free five week course exploring the Creation Spirituality tradition and its fourfold path. The class will be facilitated each Wednesday evening, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, by Rev. Todd F. Eklof, the minister at Clifton Universalist Unitarian Church. Rev. Eklof studied three years under Matthew Fox at the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland, CA, is the Worldview chair on the Sustainable Clift*n Committee, and a local environmental activist.

The class is free and open to anyone in the Louisville area, but its size may become limited, so if you're interested in attending, please contact Rev. Eklof at 895-3189 or office@cliftonuu.org to register. The class will take place at Clifton UU Church, located at 2231 Payne Street. It's recommended, though not necessary, that you read "Original Blessing" and/or "Creation Spirituality" by Matthew Fox before the course begins.

bale building will take place. this is the opportunity for anyone
interested in learning about, or just taking a look to see stage one
of what will be a community oriented building process in action. The
actual building workshop is complete, and the building has been
erected, but we will be adding the final layer of Earth Plastering on
Saturday the 17th, and having the christening party on Sunday the
18th, as well as watching a local artist paint the Mural inside the
building.

Stonyfield Farm began in 1983 as a seven-cow operation and has grown into a $330 million company and the world’s largest maker of organic yogurt. The company has achieved double-digit revenue growth and excellent profits each year for the past two decades while adopting sustainable methods that reduce environmental costs and rebalance the planet’s natural systems. Through re-use and recycling, Stonyfield prevents hundreds of tons of materials from reaching landfills and incinerators each year. They also collect their recyclable cups and turn them into useful products, like toothbrushes and razors.

SOUTHERN SAWG CONFERENCE TO THREE-PEAT IN LOUISVILLE

The Practical Tools and Solutions for Sustaining Family Farms conference returns to Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky, January 16-19, 2008.

Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (Southern SAWG) holds its seventeenth annual conference in Louisville, Ky., January 16-19, 2008 in the beautiful downtown Galt House Hotel and Suites.

Joel Salatin, this year’s keynote speaker, will address the entire gathering at the Saturday evening Taste of Kentucky Dinner on the topic “Healing the Planet, One Plate at a Time.” Earlier in the schedule Wendell Berry, Kentucky farmer and renowned author, will be part of a conversation on the necessary work of sustainable agriculture.

The conference attracts over 1,200 farmers and advocates working toward sustainable food systems in the South. The two full days of regular conference sessions start a half day earlier this year on Friday morning with even more practical sessions from which to choose.

The day and a half of pre-conference offerings begin on Wednesday at noon and include; eight intensive short courses, five field trips and five new hands-on activities. Then, on Friday morning, the conference begins and includes 62 practical sessions to choose from. This year we’ll also offer twenty U-Pick networking meetings for sharing and learning from each other. Plus, visit the exhibit hall and meet vendors whose products and services provide support to producers.

The conference sessions will cover sustainable production for horticulture and livestock producers, direct marketing strategies, business management, farm policy issues, and community food systems. The thing that sets the Southern SAWG Conference apart from others is the focus on PRACTICAL information. This is obtained though sessions led by presenters with real experience and through the tremendous networking that is possible when 1,200 of the South’s most innovative practitioners in sustainable agriculture are together at this event.

Solar Photovoltaic Workshops at the University of Louisville, January 16-18

The Kentucky Solar Partnership and the University of Louisville are offering a series of workshops on Solar Photovoltaics at the University of Louisville’s Shelby Campus. Three separate workshops oriented towards different audiences

are being offered. The workshops qualify for CEU coursework from the Program in Sustainability Studies of the Adena Center.

Instructor Chris LaForge is a Systems Manager with Great Northern Solar in Port Wing, Wisconsin. Chris has taught PV system design and installation for the Midwest Renewable Energy Association since 1993 and offers contractor trainings throughout the Unites States. He has been a NABCAP certified PV installer since 2004 and is a certified PV Instructor with the Institute for Sustainable Power (ISP) since 2003.

January 16 – 17 : Introduction to Solar Photovoltaics
For Electrical Contractors, Solar Installers, and Building Design Professionals
8:00 am – 5:00 pm, $170
Location: University of Louisville Shelby Campus
Founders Union Building, Rm. 218AParticipants in this two-day workshop will gain a basic understanding of solar electric (photovoltaic) design and installation principles. They will learn about how PV works, the four PV system types, how to describe and identify components, the best applications and limitations of each system type, defining the solar window, energy efficiency and load estimates, PV mounting types, the basics of site assessment tools, safety, battery connections, and basic line drawings. Hands-on activities will include basic installation techniques.
Registration includes lunch. AIA members will be able to submit self-reporting forms for Continuing Education Units. Other professionals and the public will be able to submit forms for Certificates of Course Completion and Continuing Education Units in Sustainability Studies from the Adena Center at Webster University.

January 18 : Solar PV Electrical Code Primer
For Code Officials, Installers, Inspectors, and Building Professionals
8:00 am – 12:00 pm, $40

Location: University of Louisville Shelby CampusBurhans Hall, Rm. 207
This course presents an in-depth analysis of issues for PV systems relating to NEC Section 690. Code issues in PV system design and specification will be covered as well as issues concerning product requirements, wiring, grounding and labeling. PV equipment will be on-hand. AIA members will be able to submit self-reporting forms for Continuing Education Units. Other professionals and the public will be able to submit forms for Certificates of Course Completion and Continuing Education Units in Sustainability Studies from the Adena Center at Webster University.

January 18 : Introduction to Solar PV
For Consumers

1:30 pm – 5:30 pm, $25

Location: University of Louisville Shelby Campus
Burhans Hall, Rm. 207
This workshop will introduce consumers to the basic principles of solar photovoltaics, including the different system types, choosing the right applications and systems, energy efficiency and load management, and basic components. Participants will learn about trends in the solar PV industry and how to combine energy efficiency and conservation efforts with PV system design, to achieve the most economical and effective PV installation. PV equipment will be on-hand. Professionals and the public will be able to submit forms for Certificates of Course Completion and Continuing Education Units in Sustainability Studies from the Aden Center at Webster University.

Sustainability Studies: The workshops qualify for CEU coursework in the Program in Sustainability Studies of the Adena Center. In this Lunch and Learn seminar, Architect/Builder Mark Isaacs connects the big picture issues of climate change and energy with the practical choices facing homeowners, neighborhoods and businesses. How can we become energy efficient and move toward sustainable

Mark Isaacs is a Louisville based architect who has long been involved in the development of green, affordable, energy efficient solar buildings and communities. Most recently his firm designed and built the Legacy Lofts project, which promises "near carbon neutral living" in market rate green buildings.

Open Living and Learning for Sustainability:
Community Based Sustainability Education and Certification

The Lunch and Learn for Sustainability Series is part of the Sustainability Certification program offered through the Adena Center for Sustainability, Communications and Transformational Change. The events were hosted at Webster University.

In the spirit of the Open Living and Learning Network, we welcome participant dialogue on the practical issues and deeper concerns facing individuals, businesses and neighborhoods in "going green." By conceiving of the "community as campus" and combining seminar and experiential opportunities with neighborhood, university and business led expertise, the Network supports ongoing learning in a variety of venues.

Upcoming seminars will cover a variety of topics, including Green and Sustainable Building, Transportation, Neighborhoods, Business, Logistics, Finance, Food, Communications,, Global Networking, Planning, Organizing, Energy, Water, Labor, Education, Research, Science and more.

Participants are welcome to bring projects and ideas for consideration in this and future workshops in the series. Community based research, learning and action networks ar one of the ways we can create community solutions to the opportunities of the transition.to sustainability.

What is learning for sustainability?

Sustainability is the watchword of the 21st Century. Communities, business and all sectors of society are learning to think globally, act locally and learn our way to a green, just and democratic world. The Sustainability Certification program is deliberately experiential, inter-disciplinary and grounded in community practice as well as sustainability theory and professional development.

Dimensions of Sustainability:

This program framework conforms in part to the Gaia Education Curriculum.

The Program in Community Sustainability Studies is an Open Learning and Living Partner with Sustainable Neighborhoods and community organizations as a Gaia Education provider. Sustainable Clift*n (2007-2008) was one of these pilot projects (see archive). The Gaia Education program is designed to facilitate our acquiring the knowledge and the ability to take action for sustainability. Open Learning and Living is supported by Gaia Education and is based on the Gaia Education Ecovillage Design Curriculum - an official contribution to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2014., and the basis for the UNITAR Sustainable Settlements Design Certification.

Certificate in Sustainability

The Certificate in Sustainability is a new program for community members as well as traditional and distance learners. We are working with the Gaia Education Curriculum and Louisville Living and Learning Network development partners to create a program which can meet UNITAR certification standards. In addition, we are developing a range of community based participatory study and action approaches in conjunction with the Community Communications programs of the Open Initiative, Adena Institute and numerous community partners.

The full Certificate in Sustainability will be awarded for completion of 120 contact hours, with a minimum of 20 contact hours in each of the four Dimensions of learning.

Continuing Education Units (CEU) credit will be awarded on the basis of one credit for every 10 contact hours.

Certificates of Completion will be offered to any learner who wishes for each individual course.

We hope you'll join us in this adventure in creating new community based models for learning and development for sustainability.

Fees: A basic processing fee of $10 per event will apply, though many community events are free and open to the public and low-income scholarships are available. Additional course tuition and fees may apply, depending on the particular course.

Community Learners are encouraged to participate in any of the courses which might meet your learning needs. Please let us know what courses or learning opportunities might be useful to you or your organization, business or community.

Educators and Community Resource Partners: In addition, we are sincerely interested in developing courses and learning partnerships which go beyond those outlined here. We welcome submissions of proposals for courses or other learning opportunities and partnerships.
